Purpose/Overview

This program is designed to provide didactic and hands-on education related to the care of left ventricular assist device (LVAD) patients residing in the community setting.

Audience

The following can benefit from attending: RNs, LPNs, NPs, PAs, MAs, EMTs and other medical team members from settings including emergency medical services in the field, long-term acute care facilities and skilled nursing facilities.

Overall Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Demonstrate how to perform controller and power-source changes on two ventricular assist devices.
  • Demonstrate how to perform a LVAD driveline dressing change.
  • Describe LVAD hemodynamics as they pertain to the patient living in the community.
  • Identify LVAD basic indication and contraindications, components and goals of therapy.
  • Identify emergency care and appropriate interventions for those patients living with an LVAD.
  • Discuss elements of daily life associated with those patients living with a LVAD.

This activity has been approved for 2.75 nursing continuing professional development hours.
Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is approved as a provider of nursing continuing professional development by Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Emergency Medical Services (EMS)

This course has been approved by the Department of Health for 3.5 hours con-ed in clinical patient care.

Fees

The fee is $10 per person and includes the cost of instruction and online handout materials.

May 16 Late Fee and Refunds:

  • Registrations received after Wednesday, May 15, will incur a $25 late fee.
  • No refunds will be made for cancellations received after Thursday, May 9.

Sept. 12 Late Fee and Refunds:

  • Registrations received after Wednesday, Sept. 11, will incur a $25 late fee.
  • No refunds will be made for cancellations received after Thursday, Sept. 5.

Evaluation

A completed evaluation is required in order to receive a certificate for attending this activity. Please complete and submit the evaluation within the specified time frame.

Cancellations

The University reserves the right to cancel or postpone any course or activity because of insufficient enrollment or other unforeseen circumstances. If a program is canceled or postponed, the University will refund any program registration fees paid but cannot be held responsible for any related costs, charges or expenses, including cancellation/change charges assessed by airlines or travel agencies.

Program registrants who are experiencing illness or have been exposed to anyone who is ill should contact the Continuing Education office before attending any in-person activities.

Content and speakers for all programs are subject to change. Registrants will be notified of any significant updates.
